I'm tired of using my odometer as a gas guage! 700 1988

I have had my '88 744 gle for more than a year now so it's about time I fix the gas guage. Here's the story: I know the car was in an accident prior to my ownership. I think this is what stopped the guage from working because the impact was on the driver's rear quarter panel, right where the lead to the gas tank is. There's a sender unit around there right? I know its not the actual guage because I grabbed one from a cluster at the junkyard and it acts the same way mine does. Both will rise the slightest amount upon startup so there is current going to it right? The needle will show deep in the red but it will move maybe 1/32" or 1/16" off the little rod that keeps it at about the 10 o'clock position. Anyhow what is causing this? Is it just a part that needs replacement that I could get at the pick and pull real quick? Any help would be appreciated.
