performance 900 1992

as a project i am
taking my old car, a 1992 volvo 940 gl with a 2.3
liter inline 4 engine. since volvo nor almost any other company on teh
market makes performance parts, i have been forced to try and create my
own. right now i am working on a cold air high flow intake. is there
anything specific i shoudl be worrying about. i see my friends'
intakes on their imports and they are jsut striaght tubes with large
cone filters on the end. does size of the tube and size of the air
filter matter? can i jsut take the tube that runs to my current airbox
and create an end on it that would accept a cone filter and get rid of
my airbox altogether? this is what seems to have been on many of my
friends imports, but it seems to me that it should be a little bit more
complex than this. if you have any suggestions that would be great.
