valve slap triggering knock sensor? 700 1985

That's a good bet. If you can beg a timing light from someone, play around with it and see if you can get the timing to move around. Then you'll at least have a reasonable suspicion to think that the knock sensor is active and causing the problem. If so, you should think of replacing it and carefully torquing the replacement.
