Update on intermittent hesitation and stall 200 1983

The car has been at the mechanic's shop for 3 days and it hasn't yet made the "offending gesture" for them. To recap the problem, the car hesitated and then stalled while I in gear and driving, and would not restart (for more initial information, see '245 D.O.R. after intermittent hesitation and stall' earlier in these posts). After sitting for some time, the car restarts and is fine. I've gotten lots of information, such as faulty fuel pumps (both in tank and in-line), fuel pump relay, fuel filter, coil, carburetor problems of various kinds, and water in the fuel tank/lines.

My dilemma is this. My mechanic says replace the in-tank fuel pump, as this is the most likely problem. However, he can't be sure without it actually failing on him, so he can't guarantee the fix. I could do the work myself, but I don't know what part I should try to replace first (cuz I don't know what the problem is). What would you do? I need to have the car up and running for next Monday.
