tranny question on 1984 240

Marty -

The Volvo auto trans is an iron horse, very hard to kill. Pull the dip stick and sniff for burned smell, anything else like a leaky shifter lever can be fixed. The overdrive unit is not the same, has a different gear ratio, as does the rear axle gears.

The auto trans 240's I've had have been great. Only my 1975 gave any trouble, the 81, 84, 86 and 88 were/are just fine. Consider doing a trans flush after you get the car. Look in the 700/700 FAQ's for the process. Also consider going to synthetic ATF.

Good Luck,

Bob
