Tranny surging? 140-160 1969

Hello all. I noticed today that when I'm in first or third gear, and under fairly strong but even acceleration, the car seems to slightly surge. Its as if it gets ahead of itself then catches up and keeps going. Almost like the engine was stalling then starting, or hiccuping, but all within one second. It'll happen a few times (really slightly) then be OK. I'm 90% certain it's not the engine because it does the same thing going down hills, it sort of gets ahead of itself then is slowed by the engine. I fear the problem lies within the inner workings of the transmission but I just wanted to ask the question or at least confirm my fears.

This may just bring about that OD conversion I've been putting off!

Thanks,
