Spacers between Tranny crossmember and frame? 200 1984

Hi, related to my car's tranny banging around making nasty noises:
Are there supposed to be spacers between the M46 tranny crossmember and where it bolts to the car? A friend said there is. If so, I think this is my problem as there were none. This would make the crossmember push the tranny too far up into the tunnel which mean no matter if I changed the mounts, it would still bang. Make sense?
