What is it?

Like was mentioned, it is the ignition control unit. The wires going into this are vitally important to the engine running at all. The wires tend to break, and the connector goes bad too. You could try hacking the connector off a car at a junkyard and rewiring your car's harness right there to see if that works. I plan to do that with my '83 245dl as the wires have gone bad, and the plug probably has too. It shuts off once every couple of weeks because of it. Good luck with the fix.
