93 240 runs better with check engine light on. WHY? 200

Why does my 93 240 run better with check engine light on?
The car was stuttering and running a little rough. I thought it was because it was cold outside. The check engine light came on and it ran much more smoothly. I reset it (unhooked the battery) and it's running rough again. What should I do first? We've already replaced the spark plugs, cap, and rotor. Thanks in advance for the help. Just some background on the car: front passenger corner was smashed, I bought it and slowly repaired it. It had 74k on it then and now has 94k on it. Did general tune-up prior to putting it on the road at 74k. Most of the 20k since then has been highway miles. What to do, what to do?
