gear selector button 700 1989

The button and rod on top of the gear shift selector are now removeable. Is this a common problem??? I was wondering how and how much of a job it is to fix that problem. Is there a picture somewhere I can look at that can show me the C clip or whatever holds the rod in place??? Also is there a diagram to show how to get the covers away from the shifting lever to get at the bottom of the shift selector. Thanks for the help.
