gear selector button 700 1989

Easy fix on the knob, but I'm not sure about the rod (I've never removed one). The knob just sits in place, nothing holds it on except friction.

Push the top of the gear shifter knob out using a screw driver from the bottom. This will push out the entire panel on top (the thing with the OD button and the gear map on it), and you will see two prongs on the bottom of it. Lead the wires through the knob so that they stick out and slide the knob down onto the rod. With the knob on and teh wires sticking out, reconnect the prongs on the panel to the button/cover plate. This is actually the trickiest/most annoying part since teh wires aren't all that long.

Once you have the wires reconnected just pop the panel back down into place on top of the knob and your done.

As for the rod... given Volvo designs I would imagine it is a twist and lock mechanism with some type of screw to clamp it down. I would pull the center panel (the cover plate that surrounds the ebrake with the seat heater buttons on it) for access, then pull of the leather shifter apron. The rod should have to slip into a rubber secondary apron that you may or may not have to remove to get at any securing elements for the rod.

It shouldn't be that complicated, just take your time, look it over thoroughly, don't force anything, and approach it logically.

Regards,
Rick
