Starter/flywheel problem 200 1984

It seems that my die-hard family car is having problems getting started. When I turn the key, I get a fast grinding noise. After a couple of times, it eventualy "grabs" and turns over fine. I'm hoping that it's a simple starter problem and dreading that the flywheel will have to come out. If it is the starter, and I do get it out, what am I looking for as far as damage to the starter? Bad teeth or something. And how can I check the fly wheel?
Thanks for any help....
Will
