Help .... I think my auto transmission is acting up! 900 1991

Hi,

I have a 1991 940GLE, 16 valve. I have just got back from late night shopping. On by way back, suddenly the car shuddered at a left turn and from there to my house (about 1km) it barely crawled. I tried to press the gas pedal a bit, it reved to 3000rpm but the car did not respond. It just kept crawling. To add salt to injury the car just refused to go up to the elevated porch in front of my house. I tried shifting the gear selector from D to 2 to 1 but no use. At last I tried the R and the car responded by reversing. So I just reversed the car backwards into my porch. Guys I know its too much to ask but tomorrow morning I have to go to work. Can somebody please let me know on some solution other than driving it with reverse gear all the way?. Thanks for any in put. I shall stay awake for a few hours for your responses.
