Boost to vacum at 5000 rpms

Here's one for the books (why does all this wierd shit happen to me?)
Got the vx3 cam from ipd, installed it last night. Runs great to about 4500 and falls on its face, but we've figured the valves probably need to be shimmed. But something else happens around 5000-5100.. it goes from 6psi to about 10mmhg vaccum at wot. The first time it happened, the air filter(cone) had fallen out of its retainer and the thought was that it was crimping the intake hose, but after we fixed that, it did it again. It could still be the intake hose, but at 5000 in neutral it doesnt do it.
Any thoughts?
btw, in so far as the cam is concerned, it feels like the car revs a little better and has more power past 4 (heh, just for 500 rpms tho) but its not a real kick in the pants.. Any body got any ideas for them too?
Thanks yall
