Steering Rack problem??? 200

Good Morning,

I have been through this on a couple different 240's. The bushings and ball joints are a good start, (and essential to a nice tight front end.)

A pull to the left can be caused by a steering rack pressure imbalance, as you suspect, or also by faulty alignment.

A test I have used for the pressure imbalance is to lift the front of the car on jackstands, and start the engine. The wheels should stay pointing straight ahead. (Be very careful not to put the car in gear and drive it off the jack stands!) If the wheels turn to the left, (on their own, with no hands on the steering wheel,) then your suspicion is correct.

Somewhere I have the procedure for adjusting the pressure, although not at hand. (It's in the Volvo factory manual for the front end, which is presently buried.) Somewhere I have the procedure written up - I'll try and find it if you need it.

On the alignment, the camber and the toe-in are adjustable on your car. If it passes the "wheels in the air" test, the alignment should be checked.

I have also replaced outer tie rod ends when worn.

On some steering racks, there is a plastic piece internally that applies pressure to the back of the steering rack. This piece can wear, and is not available as a replacement part. (at least I could not locate it.) When this piece wears, it allows the rack to lift up and down within the housing, resulting in a "slack spot" in the middle. I probably could turn the steering wheel 1" either way and not have the wheels move. For me, the fix for this problem was replacing the steering rack, after which it drove very nicely.

Good luck!

Roger
