Overdrive on 89' 740 GL acting strange 700

Hey,

Occasionally, my overdrive will kick in for no apparant reason and I won't be able to turn it off with the button. I know that this can be bad for the engine, so what do you guy's think is the cause of this? If I have to replace or rebuild anything, how big of a job would it be?
