What to use to lubricate door/trunk/hood hinges? 700

Hello,

The time has come to perform a 180kMi service on my (new to me) 1989 740GL. The manual tells me to use regular oil for lubricating hinges on the car. That's what I did last time, but now there is dirt each place that I applied oil.
Is there consensus on what to use on the hinges of this car? Do you just use oil, or has there been something better that has come about that people use?
(I've heard of motorcycle chain lube being used on hinges, it sprays on liquid, but then becomes like a grease, successfully getting into all the little crevests and staying there).
Any other tips on this job?

Thank you in advance,
Greg Markov
