After several "interesting" years of playing with a Saab 900 that I got in pretty good shape for my daughter, I appear to have take another plunge into Swedish wonderland. I bought a 1989 740 Turbo. Beautiful shape cosmetically, turbo boost seems good, and generally it appears to be a good car. Looks a lot like the 900 under the hood but the engine appears to be facing the correct way and there is a lot more room in there. Anyway there is one problem that I am having difficulty with. It is running extremely rich. 1st tank of gas was 8 mpg! I clearly have a problem. I have discovered that there is no Bentley manual for this series...what a shame. I am looking for diagnostic codes but more importantly I suppose, is there a way to read them without taking it to my Saab/Volvo Dealer? The other problem...why isn't my check engine light on? The manual shows that there is one in the dash. I pulled the instrument cluster and changed the bulb but it is still dark (even when I first turn the key on) I suspect that before this car went to the auction, some slick dealer somehow disabled it to conceal this problem. I suspect - Ox sensor, temp sensor, cat or air mass meter. Hate to replace them all. I am just a half-ass-soemtimes-putz-around-in-the-garage-at-night mechanic and Swedish or not, the Volvo is a bit different than the Saab. The Saab boards were great help and I am encouraged by some of the posts here. I sure would appreciate any advice and sorry for the long winded post!
