SHifter knob 200 1991

I have a 91 240 w/ an auto tranny. I am going to put a custom knob but have a few questions. I have relocated the o/d switch. I have removed the knob. When the knob is off I can depress the rod that allows me to switch from park. After the rod does not come back up. I believe this is because the spring is in the shifter knob. It allows me to move the stick freely from park to reverse to netrual, to any other gear with out having to push the rod.
I am guessing this is going to be a problem w/ the new knob. Can a rig up a spring somewhere so the rod stays up all the time untill i push it?
Would the car pop out of gear if I were to drive with it depressed all the time. Any other problem
Any advice would be helpful
