Gear Shifter Vibration 140-160 1972

I am ready to restore a 72 142 but after driving a 71 142 I noticed that there is no vibration in the long style gear shifter in the 71, and I am having second thoughts about the 72 for that reason. Anyone know how to eliminate the vibration in the short shifter? The only thing that I found that works is a big rag over the shifter.
Thanks-Mark Richardson
