740 Skipping or shall I say cutting out 700

I've done some more diaganostic driving, seeing as I don't have time to really work on the car. It does not skip, like an ignition skip, but rather cuts out, like the whole engine chokes, and this only happens while the car is in gear and moving. If I'm at a stop with the clutch in, I can rev the engine and hold it at 3000 rpms with no problem, for minutes. as soon as I let the clutch out it starts to cut out at random times. Seems like a fuel pump or filter or somtehing. Just looked at my inherited maintence record, and the filter is overdue. I'm gonna change that this weekend then try swapping relays if that doesn't fix it, I'll put a fuel pressure gauge on it to see what shape the pump is in. THANKS EVERYONE for your help.
