Possible expensive AC repair... can it be avoided? 200 1991

According to my mechanic (Southwest Auto near Dallas, TX):

A/C COMPRESSOR IS VERY NOISY AND WILL PROBABLY REQUIRE REPLACEMENT BY THE NEXT A/C SEASON. THE SYSTEM CURRENTLY HAS THE ALTERNATIVE RERFRIGERANT FREEZE 12 INSTALLED AND WOULD HAVE TO BE REMOVED OR RECHARGED BY SOMEONE WHO HANDLES THIS TYPE OF REFRIGERANT. WE HAVE NOT HAD GOOD EXPERIENCE WITH ANY OF THE ALTERNATIVE REFRIGERANTS OTHER THAN THE INDUSTRY ACCEPTED R-134 IN THE VOLVO 240 SYSTEM. COST TO REPLACE COMPRESOOR AND CONVER TO R-134 IS APPROXIMATELY $924


Does that seem right to you guys? The mechanics seem very honest, and are making a veritable laundry list of other minor repairs for ~$224. Sigh. There should be a seperate forum just for Volvo AC. Seems to be a common problem. Anyway, can I do what he says and go to a mechanic that works with Freeze 12? How did Freeze 12 get in there? How can I get working AC for under $500?
