I certainly wish that those who sell chemicals would use the
international standard names!!
I am pretty sure that what we call wood alcohol, methyl alcohol,
or methanol is safe. I strongly suspect that methyl hydrate
and methylated spirit are other names for the same compound,
but am unable to prove it with what I have at hand. I can tell
you that probably any alcohol is relatively safe but some of them
contain as much as 30% water and are thus relatively unsuitable.

The structural formula for methanol is :

The problem with lacquer thinners, gasoline, etc is that they tend
to attack certain kinds of rubber, making them swell and soften.
In fact that is why brake fluid was invented - it was an oil that
would not attack the older kinds of rubber. Modern rubber components
are much more resistant to such attack but still, things like lacquer
thinner, chlorinated solvents, etc are not beneficial.
