Smog junk started...1970? '71? 1800

Masters of all things Volvo,

Was trying to recall when Big Bro. started the "smog test" business?
Actually, more specifically, when did Volvo start putting cat.'s on their cars and turning down the compression to comply with the standards?

Recall reading that the 70 (or was it 71?) p1800 with the fuel injected B20 cranked out something like 130hp and then the next year it was down to 114 or so.

130hp from a 2.0 liter engine is sweeeet. What's that, exactly 65.0 ponies per liter? Doubt any of the detroit big blocks of that era were nearly as efficient. Hell, an early 90's Rustang 5.0 did/does about (IIRC) 220hp stock. That's only 44hp/liter.

Have heard that the fuel injected 1800's w/OD are capable of mileage in the low-to-mid 30's. Rumors true??

(Volvo, Once again, way ahead of its time....)
