V6's transmission is dead; car now literally *brick*; VCOA helps me 200 1982

It's an '82 V6, 100,000 miles, 3spd auto. The trans died about 50 miles from my home, and the car is now at a small shop I've never heard of. The shop was recommended to me by Gretchen, the nice young lady operating the phone at the VCOA (Volvo Club of America). I live about 20 miles from VCOA headquarters in New York. She told me that she had her V6 automatic trans rebuilt at the shop thst she recommended. She was most helpful; I'm not even a member of VCOA.
Does anyone know anything about this transmission? Rebuilds? Swaps? I'd REALLY like to know!
