My old ride quit on my roomate 200 1984

Hey BB'ers,

Haven't been around in a while, the place has changed...i like it. I've got a classic 240 problem thats running me for a loop. '84 240 DL auto w/ 210k on the clock. I sold this old beast to my roomate a few months ago for $300 and you guessed it.......it came with FREE troubleshooting mechanic work.

Problem: intermittent idle surge for the last 5k...this is a very distinct surge. after roughly 5 minutes from a cold start, there is an obvious click and the damn beast starts raging. I took the tach off and put it in my '87, but i'd guess around 3000RPM. I couldn't figure it out.

a few weeks ago Bones, my roomate was starting a 2 hour trip back to the homeland. He said he cruised around town all day with no problems. Jumped on the country highway back to N Indiana and "sexy Sady" started coughing and bucking and died on the road. We towed it back to our crib where it lies

Things Checked:
Has spark
Plugs are good and clean
Has gas in the tank
25 AMP fuse is good (already been there)
fuses checked out (they were a little cruddy)
cap and rotor in good shape
switched the AMM with an old working one - no difference
i can't check the CPU - i left my spare in KY
IAM seems to be working

i'm stumped...can anyone shed some light so i don't have to play taxi driver anymore

thanks guys,

oZ
