Odometer problems - is it a lost case? can I live without it? 200

Hi all,

I am about to purchase a 244GL 1982. The odometer doesn't work.
I've been surfing in this site (and others) and from what I read I get the impression that its a lost 'war'. People fix it, and it brakes again. Makes me think I will be wasting my time and money fixing it.

Any one is sharing/facing the same situation?
If not the Odomoeter, what should be the indicator for periodic services?
Can any one list a 'check list' that will be the guideline to trigger services if I decide to manage without the Odometer?

Thanks,
Vic.
