Which of these versions of an open Diff is correct?

I'm still trying to understand if in an open differential system, only one side gets the traction, or does it switch back and forth from right rear getting traction to left rear getting traction?

The dealer guy said there was no left side (drivers side) axle inside the differential housing on open differentials. He said the only purpose for the housing going to the left hub, wheel, etc., was to have a place for those parts to fit on. He said only the right side had an axle coming from the center differential gears, and that was THE drive axle, that propels the car forward. He said the left side does not push the car forward at all, it just spins freely. So if your right tire is not getting traction, the left will not kick in to push the car forward, as there is nothing there to kick in. Is this true?
