240 that has a bad idle 200 1991

i have a 91 240 and over the past few months i have driven many miles across the country (which may have been part of the cause), it was running fine until one day when it began to have staring problems. it seems to start then idle a bit high, no tach so it is hard to tell how high, and then after about 10 seconds it loses it and stalls out, if you play with the gas its is possible to make it run a bit longerbut it is still rough. If anyone has any suggestion for a simple fix or an idea of what could be causing this i'd take any suggestions. i give anything a shot before losing my wallet to some mechanic, thanks chris
