If my rear shocks and springs are bad, would air shocks solve my problem? 900

If the rear shocks and springs on my 1991 945 130K are bad, would air shocks solve my problem? I am trying to avoid replacing the springs. How can I find out if the springs are really weak? Is there a spring test? Symptoms: when I hit a bad bump or go over a speed hump too fast the car bottoms out and makes a sound like the driveshaft is hitting something.
