I doubt it was the o.d. more likely a fork, or even just something jamming. I have never had this problem, but the first thing I would try is to shift it into 3rd with the car stopped and the engine off. If it will go in with the car shut down it,s not the box (mostly) it,s the clutch. Is there too much free play in the cable? or is the fluid low if it's a hydrolic? It could be that the syncro on third is more worn (weird!) than the others so the badly adjusted clutch shows up there first....this is a best case scenario...
