700 heater core leaking (bet you don't see that every day) 700

I have exactly the same symptoms on my 1986 740. The Haynes manual says you have to discharge the A/C to change the heater core, but I can't see why. (The heater core & the A/C evaporator are pretty far apart.) Before I would spend clsoe to $200 getting a working A/C system emptied and recharged, I would keep putting in coolant until it became a bigger problem.
