funny odo 200 1986

so I saw another post on odometers, and thought I'd add my own question. When I changed the 5th gear light in my '86 240 this summer, the odo quit working when I put the assebly back in the dash. After a few weeks of driving, it would start going intermittently, and now it runs all the time. Here's the question: why the heck does it now run at almost double speed? I'm totally baffled why it is doing this, but it seems as if it has decided that now that I live in Canada for school, it will go to counting kilometers instead of miles. That doesn't make me happy though. Any guesses? I thought this would at least amuse some folks...
