i have the pre-81 (1978) instrument cluster (left to right -- large speedo, small Volvo logo, rectangular TEMP/FUEL guages). since my car is a DL wagon, it did not come with a tach, but just a blank space with a logo. i understand the 242s of my year came with a tach, and thats where it was placed... im not sure if the 244s did, but maybe 244 GLs. last friday, i was in a junkyard, and i saw a nice 1980 GL and i ripped out the tachometer from the middle, since its a direct fit. the only problem now is that i can't find the black wire with the spade (or whatever the connector is called) on it to make the tach actually work. the 12+ and neg. ground are both connected. i even cut the wire going to the tach from the '80GL in the yard so that i'd know what i was looking for when i got home, but i cant find it now. what am i overlooking?
i just thought of this while i was writing and i thought it may be vital. on the back of the tach, it has labels above the wire connection. above one it says '+12V', the other says 'NEG' or '-' (something indicating it is negative ground), and the one which im guessing is the actual RPM reading is labeled "1" -- now when i looked on the circular wiring harness that is plugged into the cluster, they are numbered 1 to 12 -- but there is no connection for the number 1. could this possibly be the wire im looking for? im just asking for advice, encouragement, or confirmation before i start carving up my wiring harness.
also, i bought a few of the gauges that fit on the post-81 instrument cluster addition (the ones with the bezels that fit nicely to the right of the steering wheel on post-81 200s) with the intent of making a clever little custom mounting above the air vents. i havent received them in the mail yet, but i was wondering, just so i can kill two birds with one stone, if anyone knows how i can find THOSE wires as well. i think i bought oil pressure & volt gauges.
if anyone knows where i can find a little tutorial or informational or wiring diagram on how the clusters are set up maybe i can toy around and figure it out my self, i just havent been able to find such sites. i have the four pronged semi-circle wire harness and a full circular one, i just dont know what at all of them go to.
any contribution appreciated, thanks a lot in advance.
