David: good call! to answer your question, if the name "Bosch" appears on that rheostat, THAT'S your answer; over-building is one thing, over-complicating is something else. I am sure that someone will chime in with a good explanation as to "why," but I am also sure that it COULD be made more simply; not being an electrical engineer, I wouldn't bet my doo-dads on it, but I still think that I'm right. Opinions supportive, or to the contrary?--PD.
