Alternator brush pack... 200 1976

Question for a friends '76 245. It quit charging the battery due to what I believe to be the brush pack. The car has an external regulator, so the brush pack has a plug in with 2 or 3 wires coming out of it.

Went and bought a new brush pack, and the one we got has a built in regulator and no connectors in back. Can the present alternator be made to use this new type brush pack? If so, what would we have to do? The new one looks like it would just screw right in...but what about the wires?

Or would I be best just to take the new part back and get the right one (of course, it would be nice to do the regulator while we are at it, and the built in regulator would make that a snap...if it could be made to work...)

Thanks,
Matt
