740 Hard brake peddle 700 1985

I purchased an 85 740 and it is a great car. I had surgery on my shoulder and my wife was driving it, because it is manual. The break peddle had become hard and difficult to stop. I just started driving it again and it is really bad. I now understand why she was so concerned.
As this is my first Volvo, I know almost nothing about them. It is a Turbo, I don't think that matters here. But is there a power assist function on the breaks, that may not be working, fuse blown, etc.
Help needed.
