Plastic heater control valve 700 1990

I was driving along at highway speed and looked in my rearview mirror to see clouds of smoke. I looked down at the temp. gauge and it was moving up fast, so I pulled over and shut off the engine, looked under the hood, and found water all over the engine. My "smoke" was steam and I soon noticed the broken plastic heater control valve. Why plastic, and is a more substantial valve available?
