Auto or Manual for performance?

In an '87 the M46 is probably faster. The '90-on small turbos were probably faster with an auto. I'd rather have a manual because I like shifting for myself, but I don't know the times to 60mph or 1/4 mile.

If straight line performance is your main interest, go with the auto, a higher stall speed torque converter, a valve body upgrade, and crank up the boost.
