Fuel pump relay '88 240DL Wagon 200

Hi, all. I've finally gotten around to fixing an intermittent no start problem in my '88 240DL and strongly suspect the white fuel pump relay underneath the glove compartment. But I'm not clear on how to go about it, despite some tips from one of the listers.

The relay has 6 leads, arranged in 2 parallel rows of 3, and is marked like this:

85 87/2 86/1
-- -- --
1.32830
-- -- --
30 86/2 87/1

I'm not even certain what a relay does, so I don't know whether to test for volts amps, ohms or what, and I don't know what leads to test. Can anyone help? It runs in my head it's about a $70 part, so I'd rather not replace it just to find the problem was something else to begin with.

I'd appreciate any thoughts. Thanks,

--Don
