I'm having another problem with my brick. Recently it has developed a noise I think I can describe as a metal crashing noise. If you make a noise with your mouth like your getting ready to spit, that's kinda the noise. I think I heard the same noise when I took my dad's 1990 taurus SHO to 6500 rpm's. I've gotten on the ground the best I can to listen to it. The sound seems to come from above the cat, in the lower part of the engine. If I open the hood it seems to come from under or below the heat shield on the exhaust headers. It almost seems like something in the bellhousing area. Could this be the pilot bearing I didn't replace six months ago when I changed the transmission? The car has 200,000 miles on it now and I don't know the history of the pilot bearing. A friendly guy at Autozone speculated it could be something else under the head.
I've isolated the noise from the transmission because with the car in neutral and clutch in, it still makes the noise the same. I don't get the noise at the same rpm's all the time. I've had it occur at 1700 rpms, and stop above and below. I've also had it occur at 4200 rpms and stop above and below that number. It seems odd to me that it only happens at a very specific rpm.
Thanks for input,
Nathan
