Breaking the Brake (as in falls OFF!) 700

I recently replaced the cable in the parking brake. In the process I removed the rear caliper, with pads installed and hung it out of the way.
Afterwards, I dropped the caliper over the disc and installed the bolts.
Imagine my surprise when a few days later my wife drove the car in the driveway with loud noises from the rear end, one look and................
The ears of the caliper where broken off! They were still tightly bolted on but the caliper was only held by the presence of the wheel!
I cannot understand how this happenned, I've removed plenty of calipers.
The only thing I can think is somehow the inner piston jammed and when I bolted the caliper down it cracked the caliper ears, which eventually broke completely.

From now on I'll remove the pads, bolt on the caliper, then re-install the pads...
