some advice!! 700

Hello all, what a great resource this page is!!
I am looking at buying a 1985 740 GL and was just wanting a little advice and reassurance. I will probably get it for 4000 new zealand dollars, it has done around 81000 kms and hearing what other peoples volvos have done on this and other sites it seems like this car is in its infancy!!
My main question is the bell that comes on after you reach 100kph, is this easy to remove or is it attached to the engine in some way so that it disables your car? Also was the 85 a good model? It is excellent condition and appears to go like a dream. Thanks ahead of time for all your replys, Damon.
