Waterpump Top Seal Failed??? 700 1987

On my '87 760TurboWagon I had a large loss of coolent from the failure of the waterpump top seal(between pump and cyclinderhead). The replaced waterpump has 25,000 miles on it, it looks like OME Volvo. After reviewing the maintance section of this board, I have replaced the seals. Inspecting the pump didn't seem to turn up anything. It turns freely and doesn't have excessive play, nor did it make any noise while in service. I noticed the failed seal proturding a little about a month ago. I've only owned this car about 4 months, so noted it as something to keep an eye on. The seal itself looked as if it were ripped. Otherwise it seemed flexable and serviceable. The car suffered an overheating just before I bought it. The cause was a long hill, hot day and radiator corrosion. The rad was replaced along with the fan, by a non-Volvo shop. Finially to the question...why did the seal fail??? After searching the data base of this forum, my impresson is that this seal sometimes fails. Any comments or suggestion of other things to watch out for will be appreciated. Thanks.
