steering boots & misc. 200

Howdy all, I had the old 240 up on a rack at a shop the other day and noticed that there is a broken steering boot on right side. Is this easy to replace and does it need to be replaced ASAP. My Haynes manuel says I need to remove the tie-rod end to replace boot. I would think I would just need to separate the tie-rod from the tie-rod end???? How should I test to see is there is any problems caused by the boot being broken. I don't feel anything wrong in the handling. I do get a thud noise every once in while when the wheel comes off a downhill surface onto a flat surface while under braking or I came to a quick stop after back up. Not sure what that is coming from thought it was ball joints replaced them but I not sure if that was it.

Thanks ahead of time for all the help!!! VM 82 240

PS how do I know if I have a ZF or a Cam Gear Unit. Sorry for so many ??? at once.
