89 240 wagon, needs a new computer every 8 Months???? 200

I am considering the purchase of a 1989 249 DL wagon with 96000 miles. The problem is that every 8 months or so it needs a new computer put in it and that is about an $800 repair. The local dealer contacted Volvo about the problem and Volvo offered a "suggested repair" which is the replacement of the wiring harnesses and the alternator. That would be about a $1200 repair according to the dealer. I am sure I can get the car for under $1000 but I feel like it would be a gamble to spend so much on a repair only to find I will need to put $800 more into it every half year or so. Does anyone know what the problem could be? And is there something else that would cause the computer to fail so often?

Thanks for any help,

Aaron
