740 engine shut down just after start 700 1991

My 740 auto nonturbo, has problem with start today,
the car was parked out side a grocery store for less than 30 minutes,
and when I came back to start it, I can hear the engine comes on, the RPM gauge
sudenly drop to '0'(from 800) and the engine shut down.
I tried one more time, still the same problem, but while I tried another time,
I pushed fuel pedal as soon as it comes on, and the car is just fine.
wheather is not very cold, and not very humid.
could you tell me the possible reason for this car?

thanks
