1982 GLE V6 - Transmission; what kind is it? 200

The transmission in my beloved GLE failed about 3 weeks ago, and the car has since been sitting at a supposedly reputable repair shop. They are going to look at it and give me an estimate on Monday. I was told that the transmission was a Borg T55, but the guy at the shop said it might be a 'ZF'. German, I think he said it might be. Anyway, he hadn't been under the car yet. I'm assuming that repair costs will differ depending on type of transmission. Is this correct? Any suggestion as to how much I should expect to pay, or possibly a replacement? It's a 3spd auto, no overdrive; the body on the car is straight and relatively little rust. Just turned 100k, engine runs very well. Is it worth the investment either way, replce or rebuild?
