Do I have to use the carankshaft aligning tool? 900 1992

So,
I am putting my 960 engine back together. The Chilton book (which I trust about as far as I can spit a rat) says that the carnkshaft aligning tool is required to get the timing right (which involves removing the starter and a bunch of things that don't even begin to make sense). Is this true? It seems that once I get the engine back together, and the timing marks are right on the cams and the crank, the two turns of the crank will show if it is timed up right or not. But, I don't want to put everything together and then start it and bend 14 valves again.
