Two cars......three problems....... 200

Seems as though both my Volvos are having some problems...some more serious than others. Any advice is much apprieciated...

My 1984 Volvo is giving me enough problems to make me wonder whether it is worth keeping or not. First off, the tranny. Yes, I have the automatic in it (I can hear some of you groaning already). The 4 speed, I think, with the overdrive. Seems as though the car will not move into drive or reverse when it is cold out. Once the car warms up for a few seconds, it will run fine in drive and reverse....but stop the car (say at an intersection or a traffic light), and it will sometimes pop out of drive, and then mysteriously pop back in, and be fine for the rest of the time I drive it. Needless to say, this has made for some wonderful surprises, especially as I feel my knuckles turning white at intersections.

Also, with my 1984, it's starting to run hotter than normal, and I'm thinking my head gasket may be on its way out. On cold nights, if I drive the car, there is much more white smoke from the exaust than my 1989. It will stop billowing as much after a while, but on days when my 1989's will warm up enough to the point where there is no smoke, the 1984 still has a few puffs. It hasn't gone all the way into the red zone (yet), but there times that it looks like it will.

My questions----A: Assuming the trans is going, am I better off junking the car? B: If the head gasket is on its way out, would it make sense to get it fixed or not? C: Should this one die, am I best off moving up to a 700 series?

As far as the 1989 goes, it seems to eat right side tail light bulbs for breakfast. It's also the one that works the brake lamps. It seems as though I have to carry spare bulbs in my car. And every time I replace the inside of the bulb, there's a bluish coating on the inside of the bulb. I've never seen anything like that before. It's only on that one side. Any idea what's causing this, and why the lightbulbs are turning blue on the inside?

Thanks----Steve
